Am I not among the early risers?
For bsg_aussiegirl, with my love, on her birthday. All sunshine and glitter, puppies and rainbows.

It was a habit of hers from her first days of service. Each morning Elsie Hughes would rise early, giving up a precious half-hour of sleep, to slip outside and greet the dawn.

It was her time to find something for herself before serving the needs and wants of others, her moment to take something of her own from the beauty of these houses in which she dusted the treasures of others and stocked the larders of others.

For over 20 years she'd started her day with a brisk walk, getting as far from Downton as she could in 15 minutes. She tried to outwalk the troubles the day would bring, the ache in her eyes from the paperwork, the ache in her back from stooping low and reaching high to check the work of the maids. The ache in her heart watching the young people under her charge.

The morning after New Years Elsie woke a half hour early, as she always did. Behind her she could feel the solid warmth of Charles's body. Yesterday many things had changed at Downton: the odious Sir Richard was gone, Thomas was back in His Lordship's good graces, Lady Mary had finally heeded Carson's advice and was to wed Mr Matthew. In the wake of that joy, over a glass of champagne in her parlour late that night, Charles had confessed what was in his heart, and she had finally been brave enough to plainly state what was in her own.

She turned and settled into her lover's embrace, kissed him until he woke. She didn't need to go outside to find something of her own in the vast reaches of Downton. Perhaps tomorrow she would take Charles outside with her and share with him the world she'd always kept for herself.

You wrote me Elsie/Charles rct!!!!! Yay!!!! I was hoping you would. :)

I do love the idea of Elsie getting up early to go out and enjoy the dawn. And you've added that touch of Frak sadness with her needing to get away from Downton and the youth of the others and the wealth of the others. *sniff*

And her reasons for not going on this particular day! Naughty Elsie! You go girl! And the ending...*happy sigh*

Beautiful as usual. Thank you. ♥ you

I can't not any sadness. If I left it out entirely, wouldn't bugs be sending my work in to check from whom I'd plagiarized it?

But I knew you'd like a C/H story with an unabashedly happy ending. You're so easy.

Happy birthday!

Aww, what a nice present. And what a great drabble indeed. I really love the images you've used- And the ending is so sweet and great! Now, if only it took a glass of champagne to make Charles loose his tongue...

I love that image of solid warmth of Charles :-)
I think for Elsie, the sharing of her private, long-held ritual with him would be as intimate (or more) than sex. I would love to see a drabble or more of her explaining to him about what those walks mean. I'm delighted that she now has "something of her own" right there, with him, finally. Lovely!

Sweet and I can relate to her walks as I was doing that before sunrise myself this morning. We finally get season 2 of DA here in the States this coming Sunday so maybe soon I can start allowing myself to read your DA fics. This is lovely just as I would expect given the author and the birthday girl.

So this was my first read of a fic not related to Laura Roslin or Sharon Raydor and I have to say how much I loved it. I recently started watching Downton Abbey and am enthralled with it. I'm looking forward to reading many more DA fics.

You guys out there!
I don't know where else to start saying what an ecstatic joy it is to discover that I am not alone with this very strange obsession that's taken over my already very full life ! I'm glad you guys are out there but also very worried because it is not stemming but fuelling my addiction and not very wisely too ! I love the fact that you're from all over the world from a variety of horizons and perhaps I can add to that variety. I've only been reading so far (everything and anything Carson/Hughes related from aussiegirl, you, etc on fanfiction, livejournal and here...)and not written. I think I enjoyed your comments and exchanges after the fics sometimes as much as the fiction itself. I've also discovered the Phyllis Logan addiction ward on tumblr, is that you too ? My oddity is that I have no TV, limited web access and 2 kids, 18 horses, riding students, a lovable Carson-like husband and that Elsie Hughes is uncannily like my great grand mother who was born in 1905 and died in 1999 whom I absolutely adored and loved to bits ! I guess I should register and join you guys but I'm a bit scared this will only pull me in deeper and deeper into this spiral of addiction to something I'm not quite emotionally distant enough about ! If you're the Tumblr addiction person I'll drop you a question on this soon if you don't mind....

Re: You guys out there!
I'm so glad I could do for (to?) someone else what Aussie did to me - got me in way too drop when I didn't even have time for shallow.
I am indeed the nutjob behind the Phyllis Logan Addiction Ward, so get on Tumblr and ask away!

YAIH YAIH YPEEYAIH! Happy jumping up and down! Though I don't think I should be fraternizing with the likes of you, as I already feel like I've regressed back in time to when I was 16 !!!! I need a sanity check for engaging in all this ! What the friggin' heck is happening to me ? (Sorry Frakkin' 'eck) How long has this been going for you and the others in tow ? I just feel like I've joined a community that could totally unhinge me or else save me because I was a bit alone in my head with this issue !
