The alphabet of feeling
Because I promised akachankami's teddy. For ar_drabbles challenge #89, language.

Love was a language Laura never learned to speak. When her work was put aside and Bill not yet home she'd wander his quarters looking for a Rosetta stone, some way to understand the love he so prodigiously flung around while she always found herself with the words trapped like a lump in her throat.

After Earth, she burned her maps and books and found the answer scratched into the ashes of her life. Love was not a language, it was air, and she was gasping for breath.

Maybe I've earned the right to live a little before I die.

This is lovely--it's almost like using negative space in a visual composition. And the image of her wandering his quarters for a Rosetta stone really struck a chord.

Oh sure, way to stab me in the heart. Though sadly, I do think that this is true. :(

This is so lovely, as always. :)

This is beautiful. Such evocative images in so few words- really remarkable. This image I loved especially:

fter Earth, she burned her maps and books and found the answer scratched into the ashes of her life.

Lovely. Thank you.

This evokes that fundamental difference between Bill and Laura very simply but poignantly; his emotional openness and her, entirely understandable, restraint. But the very fact that she wants so badly to find the way to understand his love and connect with him is a clear indication that, for all her inability to express them, she is not without strong feelings herself. Thank you

Love was not a language, it was air, and she was gasping for breath. This needs to go in a volume of great quotations. Lovely.
