Fighting outside the ring
bsg_aussiegirl wanted as a challenge entry "something imaginative I haven't thought of." So I wrote her this little NC drabble based on the song "Reject your shame" by the UK band SkinjoB.
For ar_drabbles challenge 86, "skinjobs".

Baltar had banned him from New Caprica. It was Saul who told him Laura had pneumonia. A few days in the medical tent and some drugs and she'd be fine, only treatment was reserved for essential workers and a schoolteacher was not on the list. Bill loaded a raptor and snuck onto the planet, assuming that Baltar's watchdogs were as incompetent as their boss.

Laura was in bed when he stepped in to her tent. "I hope you're a hallucination," she said.

"Nice way to greet your doctor."

"I knew you had a lot of free time. Didn't know you'd gone back to school."

"I've brought an apple for the teacher." He reached into his flight suit and handed her a vial of pills.

"There are people who need this more than me." Laura tried to sit up but sunk back to the bed in a fit of coughing.

"Some people might need the medicine, but they all need you." He waited while she thought it over, and then brought her a cup of water and shook out a pill. "I've brought something else."

"A book?"

"What could be better than a book?"

"I've brought guns."

"That's better than a book?"

"I know you've been organizing politically, you and my crew. But you can't hold out until elections. Three years, there'll be nothing left of humanity but a faint trace of smoke. We won't survive another winter like this. We knew we'd have to fight, always thought it'd be Cylons. It'll have to be Baltar."

"But not with guns."

"With guns, with fists, with words. With whatever it takes. It's time to choose a side, Laura -- the people or humanity."

"What side have you chosen, Bill?"

"The same side I chose the day the Colonies were nuked. Yours."

Oh, you know me. The first thing I say to myself when a challenge is posted is "how can I twist this into something Aussie never meant?"

It's a gloomy day out, so Speedy's feeling all rainbows and glitter.

Hee. I love Bill getting to come to her rescue and stick it in Baltar's face all at the same time. And I like the idea of them planning an uprising against Baltar -- it's something I'd have loved to see come to fruition if the cylons hadn't invaded. I wonder how it would've gone. This drabble shows such a sweet moment, but so serious, too.

It's time to choose a side, Laura -- the people or humanity.

I love that, too. That's a decision Laura's constantly making in a way I've noticed people around lj don't always like, but I've never seen it put so succinctly. ;)

(Sorry about the edits.)

Oh Bill, you are so suave!

I really like the idea of him coming to visit her when she is sick, but even more I think I like the idea that it is Saul who informs him of her being ill. BFF knows better than to omit that kind of information from the Old Man about his woman.

I like this. Your dialogue is very nice, but I especially him coming to her and convincing her that this time it is time to fight.

You start out so sweet with him bringing pills, but he's bringing mutiny.

Do we need any further evidence of how screwed up things are on NC than the fact that Laura is considered non-essential in the distribution of medication? And of course self-sacrificing, everyone else's need is greater than mine, Laura wouldn't argue with that. I even get the feeling that Saul telling Bill about Laura's illness was in no way at her behest.

It does feel that this is the straw that breaks the camels back for Bill because he really does understand how necessary Laura is to everyone's well being, not least his. If there is any chance of long term survival for the people it will be under her leadership, they cannot risk losing her so they have to act now. With Baltar in charge they cannot survive NC let alone any return of the Cylons.

If only Bill had chosen the people over Laura's humanity when it came to stealing the election it would never have come to this. Of course what it might have come to is a whole other story...
