To find peace in the midst of war
For ar_drabbles challenge 84: Lay Down Your Burdens. And so akachankamidoesn't worry about the rat.

Spoilers (yeah, right, I'm sure none of you have seen the eps) for the Pegasus arc.

He wondered why people put up with him. Moody, brooding, ill-suited for his job as leader of men.

He was overjoyed when the Pegasus appeared. He'd miss Laura, but life would be easier. Cain ordered; the president asked. Cain saw him as the junior officer, Laura as a partner in bringing salvation.

He was so much more than Cain's vision, so much less than Laura's.

He had spent his life living down to the expectations of others. He couldn't live up to Laura's.

Cain offered personal salvation for a price. One payment, in blood.

The dying leader was called Adama.

Ooooh! Nice spin on the whole 'dying leader' prophecy! Oh Bill, he sure does like to beat himself up doesn't he?

"The dying leader was called Adama."

So are you saying that Bill calls Kara off so that Cain can kill him? Is this a round about way to avoid living without her or do you think he doesn't love her until she gives him the stars?

Really enjoyed this story. Especially the line about how he felt like he couldn't live up to Laura's expectations.

An intriguing idea and drabble as always. I love the last line and how you turned the dying leader into Adama. Great work!!

There were a number of confounded and subverted expectations on BSG, first impressions which turned out to be wholly unrepresentative and all manner of unrealised potential.

It's interesting to see this very plausible self-assessment of Bill and compare and contrast it with the views of the people around him, and frightening to contemplate what might have happened to humanity had he, by accident or acceptance, become thee dying leader, had he been content to hand over the burden of humanity's salvation to someone else, to willingly let Laura down.

Intriguing use of the prompt. So many possibilities to consider. Thank you.
